  1. It is a divisive issue as well as a very powerful and thought evoking image.

    It could be argued that the picture highlighted to millions of people round the world that the famine was that bad, yet it also showed that in reality people were powerless to help.

  2. Wasn’t there another side of the story whereby the photographer he was with went off shooting the guerrilla fighters whilst Carter stayed near the food truck and shot images of the famine, to which he shot this one – but the mother of the child, and indeed all of the mothers who had come out to gather corn, were actually very close to this anyway?

    Either way it just makes me want to listen to the Manics again.
